FB iPad

The wait is over iPad users. There is now an official Facebook iPad app at last.

Here are some of the highlights:

A hands-on Facebook

Use your fingertips to scroll through your News Feed. Give the screen a swipe to page through albums. Pinch a picture to zoom in. Whatever you’re up to, using Facebook on your iPad just feels fun.

Bigger, better photos

Photos really shine on the iPad. They’re bigger and easy to flip through, like a real photo album. It’s like having a slideshow with all your friends and memories, wherever you go.

Vlingo (voice to text) demo video

vlingo-logo

With the imminent launch of the iPhone 4S and the new Siri feature that will allow you to use voice commands I persuaded myself to download Vlingo Plus for my BlackBerry. I used Vlingo a couple of years ago but the speech to text was a bit hit and miss. I am pleased to say that things have improved greatly now and as you will see in the demo video the application will allow you to perform a wide range of tasks on your phone without having to type.

Vlingo is not just a BlackBerry application. You can also get it for iPhone, Android, Nokia and Windows Mobile.

Tell your phone what to do!  The Vlingo Virtual Assistant turn your words into action.  Vlingo combines voice to text technology with its "intent engine" to help you quickly complete your desired action.   Simply speak to your phone or type a command through the ActionBar to get just about anything done while on the go.

You can see my demo video of Vlingo below:

Orange & T-Mobile customers to benefit from 3G in more places

Everything_Everywhere_logo

We posted last week about the T-Mobile/Orange tower sharing. Today Orange have released the following statement which is super good news for all customers.

Everything Everywhere, the UK’s biggest communications company, today announced that millions of UK mobile customers will benefit from faster internet and data speeds in more places, for no extra cost, thanks to the latest advancements in their mobile network evolution plan.

The “big switch-on”, launched last year, initially allowed Orange and T-Mobile customers to access each others’ network’s to make calls and send texts in more places than ever before. From next week, the next phase in this programme, the “big 3G switch-on”, will start to roll out to all 27 million Orange and T-Mobile mobile customers, making it possible for customers to use the 3G signals from both networks, not just their host network. This will benefit customers by offering faster internet and data access, in more places across the UK than before.

RIM announces BlackBerry tag

rim-logo

During his keynote presentation at the GITEX conference in Dubai, Research In Motion Co-CEO Jim Balsillie today unveiled a new way for BlackBerry smartphone users to connect with one another and share multimedia content.

BlackBerry Tag, which will be incorporated in the next BlackBerry 7 OS update*, will allow users to share contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content by simply tapping their BlackBerry smartphones together. BlackBerry Tag will also enable friends to instantly add one another as contacts on BBM (BlackBerry® Messenger).

"BlackBerry Tag is an exciting and innovative feature that makes sharing contact information and multimedia content effortless and seamless," said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "BlackBerry Tag opens a new dimension to the BlackBerry platform that is powerful, simple and intuitive and we think it will be welcomed by both users and developers."

BlackBerry Tag takes advantage of Near Field Communications (NFC) technology included in the recently launched BlackBerry® BoldT 9900/9930 and BlackBerry® Curve 9350/9360/9370 smartphones, and these are the first BlackBerry smartphones that will support BlackBerry Tag.

RIM also announced plans to expose BlackBerry Tag through APIs on the BlackBerry platform, allowing software developers to take advantage of "tap to share" functionality from within their own applications.

Sounds good. Finally a worth while reason to have NFC on my device!

Thieves target Apple store in Covent Garden

apple_covent_garden

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information after a smash-and-grab in central London. Police were alerted at approx. 01.00hrs this morning (Monday 10 October) to a window broken and property taken from the Apple Store in Covent Garden.

It is believed there were around 7 moped riders / motorcyclists involved, most if not all with a pillion passenger. All persons were in full face crash helmets. They stole iPads and other similar devices. Shortly afterwards Islington police saw a moped and followed and attempted to stop it, but it was lost.

A moped was subsequently found abandoned in the vicinity of Wyclif Court, St John Street EC1 – officers saw two men inside the block of flats, and they were pursued on foot and apprehended within the block at approx 01.20hrs. Some property, believed stolen from the store, was found in bags in their possession. The men  are now in custody at a north London police station.

Detective Sergeant Nathan Tozer of Westminster CID said: "Although two men are in custody on suspicion of burglary, the inquiry continues and other persons are sought. It is essential that anyone who saw the smash-and-grab, or the suspects making off, contact us as soon as possible."

What naughty men!

Orange flavoured T-Mobile

orange_tmobile_logos_biz

Orange and T-Mobile conglomeration, Everything Everywhere, is ready to properly merge its 2G networks into one, allowing the phone to switch cells as if it was a single network. Fine for voice and text messaging, but pretty useless for data. Once roaming, you will drop to the incredibly slow speeds offered by GPRS, or possibly EDGE if you were very lucky.

According to a user on the Digital Spy forum, there are now dates available for when each part of the country will switch from the current roaming system to operating as a single network.
We can’t confirm these dates as they were given with the obligatory ‘subject to change’ disclaimer;

  • October 12th: Gloucester and Midlands area.
  • Week commencing October 31st: London, Wiltshire and down to Brighton area, North Wales, North West England and Scottish Central Belt.
  • Week commencing November 7th: Norfolk, North East England and Aberdeen area.
  • Week commencing November 14th: Everywhere else.

Virgin Media announced that its subscribers – which already use the T-Mobile network – can now opt-in to enable use of the Orange network in the UK.

Ice Cream Sandwich gets pictures.

ics1We have recently been treated to a few screenshots of what Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich might just look like. There is every chance that these could be bogus however we can only hope they are real as they do look pretty exciting.

Some might say that the initial Android interface has been done away with, however to me it looks like a good combination of both the Honeycomb and Froyo interface. It looks a lot more like Honeycomb than Android on any phone. Have a look at the selection of pictures after the break and see what you think.
