Samsung Galaxy Ace unboxing video

Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-noback Samsung are certainly making the Galaxy brand name work hard for them and here we have another Android powered handset from them baring the Galaxy name, this time it’s the Galaxy Ace aka GT- S5830.

Despite it’s mid-range price the Ace offers quite a lot for the money. A 3.5″ HVGA display dominates the front while on the inside you’ll find an 800MHz CPU, 512MB RAM and WiFi supporting wireless n. What sets it apart from the likes of the HTC Wildfire is that the Ace ships with Android 2.2 Froyo. All-in-all a decent little handset when you consider the £199 price tag.

In the video below you’ll see me unbox and take you on a tour of the hardware before taking a brief look at the OS and UI. We’ll have the full review for you soon.

Samsung announce the Tab 8.9″ and a revised 10.1″

Screen shot 2011-03-22 at 20.05.26

Over in the United States today Samsung announced two new tablets. The first is a re-work of the 10.1 that was announced at MWC but his time thinner and lighter.

The 8.9 Tab sits in the middle between the the 10.1 and the original Galaxy Tab which was the 7 inch version.

Both the new Tabs run Honeycomb with TouchWiz 4.0 and are thinner that the iPad 2. I can only presume that after the iPad 2 was released Samsung decided to shave some millimeters off the dimensions rather swiftly.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be available on 8 June for $499 (16GB version) or $599 (32GB version). The old, thicker version of the Tab 10.1 is still on course to hitting Vodafone stores outside the US so it hasn’t been canceled. We are yet to learn more about the availability of the two devices, but we can confirm that the thicker version won’t be coming to the US.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 should launch early this summer for $469 (16GB version) or $569 (32GB). Not sure if or when we will see the 8.9 this side of the pond.

The Tab 8.9 may not fit into a pocket, but its screen has the same resolution as that of the larger Galaxy Tab 10.1 @ 1,280×800 pixels. That should make the 8.9 screen pretty sharp.

Want to buy a wireless network?

4GSpeedThere is an upcoming auction of the so-called fourth generation, or 4G, spectrum. The last time Ofcom held an auction, for 3G in 2000, it raised a record £22.5bn for the UK Treasury – well before the rise of smartphones that are now so prevalent. The auctions due to happen in 2012.

The additional spectrum to be sold off should mean faster speeds for downloading data to phones. Ofcom says the auction is equivalent to three quarters of the mobile spectrum in use today. The actual parts of the spectrum being sold – at the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bandwidths – will be parts of the wireless spectrum historically used by analogue TV, which is being switched off as digital is rolled out.

Cheques books at the ready then!

Note to Matt – I have 90p in my piggy bank, should we club together and buy it?

Apple confirm iPad 2 UK pricing

overview_gyro_20110302 We knew that the iPad 2 would go on sale on Friday 25th March here in the UK and the time that you can go buy in-store (if you want to queue) is set to be 5pm. No word yet on pre-order or reserve for in-store collection though but I’d say given that we’re now so close to launch day it’s pretty unlikely.

Firm UK pricing has also been announced today and you can see the matrix below (note prices inclusive of VAT).

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc feature demo video

Xperia_arc_Black_1-1 Just the other week I managed to get my hands on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc (aka XPERIA X12) and recorded a video tour and demo of some of the features of the handset. There were a few things that I didn’t manage to cram in to the original 20-minute-long video so I decided to record another here for your viewing pleasure.

In this video I quickly recap the hardware spec and then look at customising/moving icons in the program menu before showing off the email view with preview pane, a feature unique to the Arc.

We shall have a proper unboxing video and full review of the Arc just as soon as we can get our hands on the final retail hardware. Remember that we are still looking at a prototype in the video below.

Twitter for BlackBerry

T4BB

Five years ago today on the 21st March 2006, a man named Jack Dorsey sent the first tweet. Today Twitter is growing at an incredible pace, with an incredible 140 million tweets sent per day.

I have been informed that BlackBerry is the number one Smartphone for Twitter. There have been in excess of 6 million BlackBerry Twitter downloads to date, revolutionising the way people share and interact. The Twitter for BlackBerry app can help make tweeting easier and more intuitive – so you can literally tell the whole world what is on your mind.

A fully featured and fully integrated Twitter app for BlackBerry Smartphones which ticks all the boxes. The app notifies you with new direct messages, tweets or mentions and works alongside your BlackBerry Browser and camera, so it only takes a moment to post a link or upload a picture. Plus, you can follow friends, search for a topic of interest, edit re-tweets, and find users quickly by typing @usernames.

Twitter for BlackBerry is available to download for FREE from BlackBerry App World
