Sony NAS-Z200DIR review

sony-z200 Let’s not beat around the bush, the Sony NAS-Z200DIR multimedia HiFi is a beast both in terms of performance and sheer size.  Measuring over half a meter in length (535mm to be precise), you’ll want to make space for this piece of audio kit.

Over the years my home audio setup has declined with the introduction of digital media.  Most of my music listening is now done through the PC and apart from a recent purchase of an iPod dock for the kitchen, the only other audio hardware I own is a radio alarm clock by the side of the bed.  So surrounded by tiny audio sources, the Sony NAS-Z200DIR HiFi was like rediscovering music all over again.

O2 announce iPad 3G data plans

O2

Hot on the heels of the Orange announcement last week O2 have also just released details of their iPad 3G data plans.

O2 today announced further details of its dedicated data tariffs for iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G. All iPad data tariffs will be available without a long contract and include unlimited access to BT Openzone and The Cloud Wi-Fi hotspots at no additional cost. Apple and O2 have worked together to provide a breakthrough way to easily activate, manage and monitor an account right on iPad. Customers will be notified as they approach their data limit with a direct link to iPad settings to check data usage, top up the account and upgrade or cancel their tariff.

iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface. iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G models are just 0.5 inches thick and weigh just 1.6 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and deliver up to 10 hours of battery life for surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching videos or listening to music, and up to nine hours of surfing the web using a 3G data network.

BlackBerry 9670 caught on video running OS 6

BB 9670 Flip

Thecellularguru has once again posted a video of the BlackBerry 9670 but this time it is over seven minutes long!

We brought you some footage of this unofficial BlackBerry last week and I said that the design had really grown on me. After watching this new video it has grown even more. Just as interesting is that the majority of the below video is demonstrating the forthcoming BlackBerry 6 OS.

As you will see the new OS is very much BlackBerry but with some nice refinements and tweaks. It is certainly more colourful and in typical BlackBerry fashion it is simple to navigate.

I am sure that by the time both the phone and the OS are officially announced and released by RIM we will see even more refinements but in the meantime I am more than happy with what I have seen so far.

Now I just got to get my hands of once of these flippy phones!

Enjoy the video after the break..

Palm Pre wasn’t a disaster (according to Palm)

palm-pre

Palm has countered claims made by Carphone Warehouse and O2 staff that sales of the Pre were a “disaster.”

The Palm Pre is exclusive to O2, and has recently been made free on all 18-month tariffs from £30 upwards.

A Palm spokesperson said: “We acknowledge a few minor quality issues with in-store demos at launch, but these were dealt with quickly. Sales are in line with expectations.”

Palm has since been purchased by IT manufacturer HP for $1.2 billion (£788 million).

Orange 3G Blackouts

logo_orange Orange customers have complained of being unable to receive 3G coverage in locations where signal was previously good.

Most customers said their handsets would not automatically switch to 2G in those areas, and had to manually shift onto the slower connection.  Areas affected include parts of Hatfield, Ipswich, Colchester, North Lanarkshire, Glasgow, Dumbarton, Alexandria and London, customers claimed.

Orange was unable to confirm 3G problems in all sites, but admitted to problems in London, Colchester and Ipswich.

An Orange spokesperson said: “Unfortunately [EC1Y 2BJ] lies half way between two mast sites of our current [locations]. We are currently in the process of updating these sites to improve coverage and also looking at opportunities for new masts in this area to ensure customers in this area receive an improved service.

O2 are the BEST (according to O2)

o2

O2 last week defended its UK 3G network, going so far as to suggest it provided a superior customer experience in much of the UK, and in London in particular.

Tension is high among operators over network quality, and O2, considered by many watchers to have the weakest 3G network in the land, was asked to respond to claims by Vodafone in recent advertising that its 3G network offered the best quality of service.

O2 UK chief technology officer Derek McManus said: “Is Vodafone best for 3G quality? Not in my opinion, no. Overall, O2 has a better network – although, there are also parts of the country where we don’t. But we’d rather be honest, and talk to customers in a language they understand.”

Order an iPad today!

ipad

Today is the day thousands of people have been waiting for. The iPad can be ordered here in the UK.

You will have to wait until the end of the month to actually get it but at least if you get your orders in now it will guarantee you getting one.

As we said last week, prices are higher here in the UK than in America but when I did that post I failed to take one thing into consideration, V.A.T. We must pay an extra 17.5% than our friends over the pond but even with this taken into account our prices are still a little bit higher. Oh well. Nothing we can do about that.

Anyway, if you want to order an Apple iPad you can do so here.

Enjoy.

HP Officejet Pro 8000 review

10641-277hpofficejetpro8000600 As I tend to run the office side of the tracyandmatt operation I’m frequently printing documents, postage label etc. and for the past few years we’ve used an HP Colour Laserjet printer for the day-to-day tasks. The issue with that is it can take quite a while to turn on and warm up and the first page out of the printer can take 5 minutes or more. It’s also a beast of a printer sitting here in the office.

Laserjet printers are great for speed and quality but the print cartridges can work out to be quite pricy so when our required two new colour cartridges the other week it was going to be an expensive purchase. However the folks over at IT247.com have impeccable timing and contacted Matt that very week and offered to send us the HP Officejet Pro 8000 to review.

Having set up the printer and used it now for a few weeks it’s time to tell you what I think of it.

Read on for my take on the Nokia N86 and how it still holds up today.
