Lastolite Studio Cubelite review video

I frequently get asked about the photos that we use in the reviews here in tracyandmatt, seems that some of you are curious about the equipment and method that we use to take the shots of the review devices.

I thought the easiest way to show you would be to record a video of my setup as well as a bit of a demonstration/review of my new Lastolite Studio Cubelite that I recently started using.

Lastolite Studio Cubelite review

The Lastolite Studio Cubelite

As I mention in the video, I used to use an inexpensive light cube that I bought from eBay. The results aren’t bad, 90% of the photos on site were shot using the cube and my Canon DSLR camera. But I wanted something a little better which is why I ended up with the Lastolite setup. I am certainly not a professional photographer but I am keen to do the best I can so hope that you find these tips useful.

Lastolite Studio Cubelite

Lastolite have two sizes of Cubelite, a 70cm version and, this the 100cm version.

The Studio Cubelite™ is the ultimate solution for product photography and takes our highly successful Cubelite™ concept even further. It allows for control of the light from below and all other directions allowing the photographer to give products that floating look with no shadows if desired. The tensioned diffuser fabric means the reflections on even the most reflective surface are kept to an absolute minimum, whilst the generous front opening can be closed to mask reflections from the camera/operator as well. The patented design also allows you to control the light from underneath by pointing the source up or down into the base unit giving different light distribution effects and creating graduated backgrounds if required.

Hotfix for the HTC Touch HD

image Well we don’t know if this is good or bad, yet another hotfix for the HTC Touch HD after last weeks double fix. A positive look and we say well done HTC for getting these out fast and frequently, on a negative, why has this device got so many problems. Anyway this hotfix addresses a problem when you use the Camera function to take a picture in a dim environment with super fine quality, sometimes the image will display extraneous (noise) pixels in the viewfinder mode. It’s not a mechanical (LCD) fault but only an intermittent display problem in view finder mode. It does not have any impact on the picture quality or other display functions. If you encounter this problem, please download this hot fix to enhance the virtual viewfinder mode. More details and download link after the break.

Kogan Agora delayed indefinitely

image Remember that great looking Android phone with the front facing QWERTY keyboard we told you about a while ago and caught a glimpse of on video at CES. Well it has now been delayed indefinitely citing concerns over compatibility with future Android apps. This is such a shame as we know that this would have been a popular device with the specs and form factor running Android. Ah well never mind, I am sure some new Android devices will be just round the corner.

Change, a phone we can believe in

kenya-obama-phoneNext week the entire world will welcome a new American president. Barack Obama is  wildly popular around the world, but nowhere is more excited than Kenya, the birthplace of the President-elect’s father. How is Kenya celebrating the inauguration? With an Obama branded cell phone, obviously. Mi-fone, a maker of low end mobiles for Africa and South Asia has created a budget handset for the Kenyan market in order to cash in on that country’s love of the future president. If someone were to create a phone to cash in on a politician, I don’t think there is a better choice these Days Than Obama. The phone features dual band GSM, a built in FM radio, an LED light, and a 4.5 hour talk time. The phone should be available now for around $30.

HTC to use Nvidia’s Tegra processor on 2009 new devices

image Chip maker Nvidia will power new mobile devices made by HTC. The maker of popular Geforce graphics cards technology enabling computers to render 3D imagery is pushing a new Tegra processor that is aimed for mobile devices and lower powered Netbooks. “We believe that HTC has selected the NVDA Tegra applications processor for a new handset design that will ramp in [the second half of 2009],” according to Doug Freedman of American Technology Research. Announced in early 2008, Tegra puts an Arm-based processor core, a GeForce graphics core and other components onto a single chip. The product lineup will include the Tegra 600 running at 700MHz and the Tegra 650 running at 800MHz.

Android Dream G2 video

image Android Central have uncovered a video which looks like the Dream G2 Android phone for the Chinese market. There is a video of it in action after the break. Surprised to see a lot of stylus action going on in the video although this phone doesn’t have a hardware keyboard maybe its not that big of a surprise especially for handwriting recognition which there is an application for on this phone. The multimedia capabilities of the phone in this video are on display with a movie sample and some music. Take a look after the break.

Centro 2 running WebOS

1231775037.gif Palm Infocenter has heard from a seemingly reliable firsthand source that Palm is prepping a new Centro 2 that will debut later this fall on Sprint. According to Palm Infocenter, the Centro 2 is supposedly around the same size as the current Centro and will run on the Palm WebOS. PIC also mentions a PCMag article that addresses the top 15 questions concerning the Palm Pre and the WebOS. Question #4 was “Will there be other Pre models?”, and the answer is:

“Yes. There will be different models, in different shapes and sizes. According to a tipster, the next Pre may be a lower-cost, candybar-style phone without a QWERTY keyboard.”
