Verizon merges with Alltel now America’s largest network

Verizon (Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless) will complete its $28.1 billion takeover of Alltel on January 9. This will add images more than Alltel’s 13 million customers to Verizon’s 66 million to create the largest Verizon mobile network in the US. Both Verizon and Alltel use Qualcomm’s CDMA technology which will hopefully avoid the problems that Sprint encountered when it merged with Nextel in 2005. That merger began the rapid decline of Sprint when it failed to successfully integrate Sprint’s CDMA network and Nextel’s IDEN network.

LG announces dual SIM KS660 and 3G wristwatch GD910

LG have announced two new mobiles for the Asian and Eastern European markets which will come in the shape of the new touchscreen based LG KS660 which will support two SIM cards simultaneously (a first for LG) and the extravagant GD910 mobile phone which will take the shape of a wristwatch.

The LG KS660 is a dual-SIM phone supporting tri-band GSM connectivity. It has a 3-inch TFT touchscreen display with WQVGA resolution (400×240), 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and video recording at 720×480@15fps. Additional specs include 50MB internal storage, microSD expansion slot (up to 4GB), Bluetooth and USB capabilities. Unfortunately the phone lacks in 3G and Wi-Fi which could prove to be an awful mistake from the LG camp.

The second mobile phone is LG GD910 and it comes in the unusual wristwatch form factor.

You may remember the wristwatch prototype by LG that was displayed at the MWC 2008. Well, they’ve made it real this time and it would be first showcased at the CES 2009 next month.

The LG GD910 is 13.9 mm thick and sports a 1.43-inch touch LCD screen. The main selling point of the device is 3G video calls thanks to the front-facing camera.

Behind the watch disguise you will also find HSDPA and Bluetooth connectivity, voice dialling and speech recognition, text-to-speech feature and a music player.

Currently, we don’t have any information about pricing or availability of either device but we will do our upmost to bring you that information ASAP.

Review Optoma Pico Pocket Projector

image Having reviewed lots of mobile phones last year it is nice to start this year with a review of an accessory that has left me speechless, well nearly anyway. When I was offered the chance to review this pocket sized projector it really interested me as I had heard so much about it and couldn’t wait to receive it and now after a few weeks use its time to share my thoughts on this amazing piece of tech.

David Pogue discusses the potential of mobile devices

image In America there are 3 or 4 really influential tech journalists whose opinions really matter in mainstream newspapers. People like Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher of The Wall Street Journal, Ed Baig of USA Today, and my personal favorite David Pogue of The New York Times. Pogue’s short videos which air on CNBC are also available as a podcast and are something I look forward to every week. Pogue gave a speech recently where he discusses the mobile trends he expects to see develop in 2009. It is a really entertaining and informative discussion (including a couple of funny songs). The main thrust of his talk centers on how mobile services will become more and more important in the coming year. More after the break, including the video.

iPhone Elite QWERTY keyboard accessory

3rdpartykeyboard-retouchedThe iPhone just got a whole lot more tempting for me this morning. The idea of a QWERTY keyboard add-on is hardly new, however, this one really looks tempting. The idea of the keyboard also becoming a rather resilient cover for the screen will attract a great many people. Click on for more info.

Microfi Nitrogen MP3 player for Windows Mobile

image Its long been a big moan of mine that the media capabilities of Windows Mobile devices are inferior to the iPhone and it looks like I am not alone in thinking this as the guys over at XDA have decided to make their own MP3 player. Microfi Nitrogen is a native Windows Mobile application (unmanaged code) that allows you to play MP3 songs stored on your Pocket PC device. It features a file browser, full skin support, “Shuffle” and “Repeat” modes, a 10-band equalizer with preset support, a built-in sleep mode and a command to blank screen to prevent energy waste while playing music. More details with downloads after the break.
